Not impressive in architectural terms but anyone with an eye for the past will surely be keen to seek out this grim ancient site. You'll find it in the corner of the Praça da República where a small arcade, now housing an art gallery, and located below the old Custom House, bears a small plaque, Mercado dos Escravos. It was the first slave market in Europe, and the only one in Portugal, used from 1444 onwards
